This drive has been configured to run either System 7.0.1 or System 6.0.8 as necessary to allow it to "Plug and Play" on any Macintosh computer.
If you have a Macintosh containing less that 2 Megabytes of RAM the drive will boot up under System 6, otherwise it will boot up under System 7.
Ñ CHOOSING WHICH SYSTEM TO RUN Ñ
If you are running on a machine with less that 2 Megabytes of memory you may only run System 6.
If you are running on a Classic II, PowerBook, or Quadra, you may only run System 7.
Other Macintoshes may require System 7.1 in order to boot. Apple does not permit La Cie to distribute System 7.1. If your are using a Macintosh that requires System 7.1, you will have to update the system on this drive with System 7.1 from your Installer diskettes that came with your Macintosh, or that you purchased separately. Do not attempt to use System 6 or System 7.0.1 on a Macintosh that requires System 7.1 or later. Please see the release notes for information on making a bootable System 7.1 Silverlining diskette.
On other machines you may choose either System 6 or System 7. In general, it is recommended that you use System 7 since this is the newest system and contains many new features that increase its capabilities. System 6 is somewhat faster and you may find some software that is not yet compatible and fails to run with System 7.
For these reasons, you may find that you wish to switch between systems to determine which operating system best suits your needs. To do this, it is recommended that you use a program named "System Picker" that allows you to easily switch between systems.
Ñ CHOOSING WHAT TO REMOVE FROM THIS DISK Ñ
As you may have noticed, this disk contains a great deal of data - almost 30 Megabytes worth. You may not wish to keep this much information on this disk permanently.
WHATEVER YOU REMOVE, YOU ARE ADVISED TO MAKE A BACKUP
ON FLOPPIES OR OTHER REMOVABLE MEDIA FIRST!
You may remove the contents of this drive as follows:
Ñ System 6 and System 6 Stuff:
Remove if you are currently running System 7 and are sure that you will not want to switch to System 6. You should also notice two folders named "Desktop folder" and "Trash". These are two invisible folders created under System 7. After checking their contents, you may also remove these two folders.
Ñ System 7 Folder and System 7 Stuff:
Remove if you are currently running System 6 and are sure that you will not want to switch to System 7.
Ñ La Cie Utilities:
Be sure to check the version numbers of all the files in this folder and compare against those found on the floppy disk supplied to you by La Cie. In some cases, software updates are installed on the disk before our disk and manuals can be updated. In this case replace the copies on your floppies with the copies in this folder. After this, you may remove this folder if you wish.
Ñ Virus Fighters:
It is recommended that you make a habit of running one of the Virus fighter programs included in this folder. Once you have chosen which one you wish to use, you may remove all the unused programs in this folder.
Ñ Other Software:
Examine the files in here first, there are lots of them. Save the ones that interest you and remove the others.

Ñ This software is NOT provided in any other form. Be sure to back up this software if wish to keep it before initializing the disk or removing any files/folders.
Ñ The ability to boot up under System 6 is achieved by setting the drive to come up under System 7, and uses a patch to System 7 file to detect insufficient memory. This feature will be lost if you replace the System 7 file supplied here by La Cie. It will also be lost if you rename to folder currently named "System 6" to any other name. If the drive is configured to come up with System 6, and you move the drive to a Macintosh that requires System 7, the drive will not automatically switch to System 7, and will fail to mount. You will need to use the System Picker utility to reselect System 7 for that drive.
